Utrecht is one of the older cities located in the heart of the Netherlands. It is the fourth-largest city of the country. The ancient city center features many buildings and structures dating as far back as the Middle Ages. Utrecht was the most important city in the Netherlands until the Dutch Golden Age, when it was surpassed by Amsterdam as the country’s cultural center and most populous city.

Utrecht is home to Utrecht University, the largest university in the Netherlands, as well as several other institutions of higher education. Due to its central position within the country, it is an important hub for transportation, it has the busiest train station in the Netherlands. It has the second-highest number of cultural events in the Netherlands, after Amsterdam.

Utrecht’s skyline is dominated by the Dom Tower, the tallest belfry in the Netherlands and originally part of the Cathedral of Saint Martin. Another landmark is the old center and the canal structure in the inner city. The inner city has largely retained its medieval structure.

The city offers an active cultural life with several theatres and theatre companies as well as many art galleries. And every Saturday a pavior adds another letter to The Letters of Utrecht, an endless poem in the cobblestones of the Oude Gracht in Utrecht.

Enough to explore during your next visit!

Dom toren

The iconic Dom Tower is Utrecht’s pride and joy – a special monument with a unique story. At 112 metres, it remains the highest church tower in the Netherlands.

The tower has been the central feature of the city for centuries, and has borne witness to the trials and tribulations experienced by its citizens. The tower survived violent storms, occupations by foreign powers and fires – but it has also seen festivities, flourishing trade and the expansion of the city.

Nijntje Museum

The miffy museum enables young children to discover their world while they play – together with miffy and friends. The moment they enter the museum, children are immersed in miffy’s happy little world, which starts with her house. From there, miffy takes them on an adventure that invites them to discover the world around them step by step. Crawl, explore, sniff, dance, you learn so much more while you’re playing! The rooms at the miffy museum are each dedicated to a different subject. The miniature worlds created in these rooms include miffy’s house and familiar everyday experiences such as going to the doctor and going to the zoo.

The creative workshops in our art room are great fun. The art room is open daily and there are professionally supervised creativity workshops every weekend. Paint, stamp, snip, stick… Make something lovely and enjoy every minute of it!

The museum can be very busy during the weekend and holidays. Since there are only a limited amount of visitors allowed in the building at once, tickets are sold in time blocks to ensure your safety and comfort.
